These are letters compiled by Martha Derby Perry ,the wife of surgeon John G. Perry. who entered Harvard College in 1858, and who applied for the position of volunteer contract assistant to serve in a military hospital. He was assigned to duty at the Chesapeake Hospital. He received permission to fit himself for his final exams at the Boston Medical School by means of army hospital experience, rather than the usual routine of studies. There are 8 illustrations including a portrait of Perry from 1864. The letters begin on May 18th 1862 and go thru Aug.13th 1864.
