This beautiful and complete set of surgical instruments was made by S.S. Bliss of 79 Randolph in Chicago.

The set has a brass plate marked R. F. Fowler Galena, ILL. There is a diploma of graduation for Dr. Fowler that accompanies the set from Geneva Medical College N.Y.. It is identical to a diploma found online for Elizabeth Blackwell ( first female physician) who also graduated from Geneva Medical in 1849. Fowler graduated in 1850 and has the same signatures on his diploma as Dr. E. Blackwell.

There is a photograph of Dr. Fowler as well as extensive biographical material that goes with the set.. Geneva Medical disbanded in 1871 and became the State Univ. of New York Medical Center.

Dr. Fowler was born in 1825 and died in June of 1899. He was a physician in Galena in 1861. and was a pensionj surgeon.checking out veterans of the civil war to determine if they qualified for pension as a result of their war injuries from 1862 -1865.

The set came directly from his family.
